Arguably The best athletic team NTHS ever produced the '60-'61 grapplers had a dual meet record of 15-1. With  Alder, Isel and Dobrowolski  finishing 2nd in the state and the team finishing 2nd in the state, the team was captained by Jim Miresse.
The '61 football team had a good season with a 4-2-2 season. This was the last team before the split between East and West. This team produced a couple of future pros in Dave Recher '61 and Jim Hart '62 led by co-captains Howie Alder and Denny Dobrowolski and coached by former Pittsburgh Steeler player, Mike Basrak.

Reflections Yearbook
With 5 seniors and 7 juniors (mainly due to management issues) the basketball team ended up 7-12 for the year and went out in the first round of the playoffs. That was a better record than '60 (3 wins) and '59 (6 wins). If they hadn't split the schools the following year, they would have had a powerhouse team with 7 returning lettermen.
We won the regionals and the sectionals, and played in the quarterfinal game at Bradley University. Unfortunately they matched us with Morton High School, and they had finished first in our conference and we were second. We had finished second to them in the state American Legion Tournament the previous summer.  The bad deal was that we were probably the best two teams in the tournament. We had split during the regular season. They beat us, and then beat a downstate team, Wood River in the finals 20-0.
The tennis team followed in the tradition of the class of '61 and finished 3rd in the state finals.
